Habanera and Interlude from "Carmen" by Bizet

Both of these selections from Carmen are great for working on articulations. Both the “Habanera” and the 2nd Movement have a lot of repeated notes so it is very important to rearticulate them. If you do not clearly tongue each repeated note the rhythm will become unclear to your listeners. An example of these repeated notes are the C’s in measure five of the “Habanera” or the B’s in measure five of the 2nd movement. Actually, in the 2nd movement, there are repeated notes in almost every measure. Make sure to use a clear “tah” syllable every time you tongue in these pieces. Also, try to keep your tonguing light so you can keep your tempo up. Besides the many repeated notes, there are a few other tricky measures that will need a little extra attention. In the “Habanera” measure 25 and 26, make sure that your E octaves are in tune. It is very obvious when octaves are not in tune. In the 2nd movement, make sure to practice measure 37 slowly at first because it is a very tricky spot for the fingers. Also, be sure to blow lightly in this measure so that you don’t over blow the notes using sub holes.

Evening Prayer from Hansel and Gretel by E. Humperdinck

We have prepared the sheet music for the ocarina and the piano score for you.

When practicing this piece, make sure to really concentrate on your use of air and how well you support it. As you play, think about places where breathing makes sense. Breathing in the middle of a phrase can often distract listeners from the music itself. Because this piece is so chant like, it is important to connect each note of a phrase with good breath support. Decide where you want to breathe and mark it in your music. Then, practice breathing only in those spots. This may be difficult at first but can be easily achieved with practice.
